Taxis in Riyadh are white and normally use their meters. Short trips are SR5, going to the city outskirts will set you back around SR20. Some Indian and Pakistani drivers speak English, but you should be prepared for drivers who don't. Find a landmark near your destination and ask the driver to go there.

[edit] See

Riyadh is starting to open itself up thanks to the efforts of the Supreme Commission on Tourism. Most notable strip for Riyadh will be Thaliah Street. This main road boasts a couple of restaurants such as Applebees, Chilli's, and a few local brands.

Riyadh is primarily flat, but the Skybridge of the Kingdom Tower will give you an impressive sight of the Najd Desert.

Head down towards the Makkah Road for 30 minutes, and you'll end up in the Tuwaiq Escarpment. Here you will get a good feel of the desert with dunes and buttresses.

unlike many would expect, a trip to Riyadh could be a mouth juicing experience for the bussiness traveller with a taste in food.

to mention a few places ;

Sheraton Riyadh if offering a very rich buffet for breakfast, covering a wide spectrum of great mediterranean and middle eastern delicacies, as well as regular european food.

the italian restaurant in the ground floor of Sheraton Riyadh is fantastic..kitchen staff are apparently of outh asian origin, however, the pasta with its freshly prepared sauce is just beyond words can describe..this is the best pasta i have ever eaten in my entire life, including my rich experience in italy.

there are many places you can eat in Batha street..just walk along the street and pick the place for your taste.

also Pizza Hut Riyadh has a rich fresh salad buffet, wonderful thin n crisp pizza..the waiter has even brought a big bowl of extremely fine quality extra virgin olive oil for me to dip my bread..

don't miss the chance to taste saudi version of felafel, also the khummus..both are wonderful snacks/foods.

mirra, viz., coffe made in beduin style is just great, particularly tasted with fresh dates..

added to that the wonderfully humid desert air, makes one feel just great after visiting Riyadh..

The Mutaween, the religious police, is numerous in Riyadh and not to be messed with. Women should cover themselves with an 'abaya' (bought in shops everywhere in Riyadh)

Gay travelers must be very, very discreet. Men sharing a hotel room is not considered offensive since it's a common way of saving money, but take care - they find it disrespectful
