Narragansett

Narragansett is in South County. It includes the villages of Gallilee and Point Judith. Families and students enjoy Narragansett especially in the summer because beaches are so close! After spending all day in the sun, there are many restaurants to sit down, relax, have some drinks, and eat some good food while hearing the ocean waves hit the shore.

  • From New York/Connecticut:

I-95 to Exit 92 in Connecticut. At the light, make a right onto RT 2. You will be on RT 2 for 1.5 miles when you will see a sign for 78 west on the right. Take 78 west for approx. 4 miles. Look for signs for US RT 1 north, make left at intersection. You will be on Rt 1 for 20 miles, make right off Narragansett exit. Follow signs to RT 108.

  • From Boston and all points North:

I-95 to Exit 9 in RI. Exit in left lane off highway onto RT 4. Follow RT 4 to RT 1 South for 8 miles to the Narragansett exit. Turn left at light and go under overpass. At this rotary bear left and follow signs for Narragansett.

The easiest way to access the charm of Narragansett is by foot or bike. If staying for a long visit in Narragansett, you may want to consider a beach pass for access to alternate parking because the beautiful beaches attract many people which leaves parking hard to find and expensive. Having a beach pass would guarantee parking in reserved parking lots.

  • South County Museum, Strathmore Street,+1 401-783-5400. Established in 1933, the South County Museum is devoted to the history and culture of southern Rhode Island. Visitors can experience a living history farm and six buildings devoted to blacksmithing, carpentry, printing and textiles.
  • Narragansett Towers, 35 Ocean Road. (parking available along Ocean Rd. or at Narragansett Town Beach), +1 401-782-2597. Spanning Ocean Road and overlooking the town beach, the Narragansett Towers are all that remain of the Narragansett Pier Casino. The casino was constructed between 1883 and 1886, and was Narragansett's biggest attraction at the turn of the century. However, after two fires and a few hurricanes, the Towers are all that remain. Today they host a wide variety of events, and are an extremely popular venue for weddings.
  • Point Judith Lighthouse, Located on Point Judith, follow RT 108 South to Coast Guard Station. This picturesque lighthouse marks the west side of the entrance to Narragansett Bay and is a popular destination among locals and visitors. First lit in 1857, the lighthouse remains an active aid to navigation. The lighthouse and surrounding buildings are closed to the public, but the grounds are open during daylight hours and feature a number of benches and lawns to enjoy the scenery from.
  • Newton Rocks, Take Ocean Rd. to Newton Avenue. This giant rock cliff, located right down the road from Narragansett beach, is a great place to hang out and have a picnic. This picturesque spot looks over the bay and coastline of Narragansett and you can even see a great view of Block Island.
  • Indian Head, One of the most famous landmarks in Narragansett is a HUGE wooden sculpture of a Narragansett Indian head. This sculpture is located right next to the playground and is lit up at night.


  • Narrow River, While taking a stroll down Narragansett Beach, past the Dunne’s Club, you’ll see the Narrow River, which runs all along through Narragansett and feeds into the bay. This is a great little area to have a picnic, just take a walk, take a little swim, kayak, or even canoe!

  • Narragansett Town Beach, 77 Boston Neck Road, http://www.riparks.com/narragansetttown.htm is located in the town center, a favorite for visitors and town residents. $5 admission charged (8AM-5PM everyday of the summer) Facilities include 2 pavillions, cabanas, showers, a beach front club house available for rent,lifeguards, food concessions, restrooms, first aid and is handicap accessible. Rental cabanas, picnic areas, changing rooms, boardwalk for beach access are also available. Offers lots of recreational programs such as surfing lessons, aerobics classes, junior lifeguard program, musical concerts, sand castle contests, volleyball leagues, triathlon, kite festival and pumpkin festival.
  • Scarborough State Beach, 870-970 Ocean Road, http://www.riparks.com/scarborough.htm. The Scarborough Beach Complex is comprised of two separate areas, the North and South. Each has a pavillion, showers, 75 picnic tables, boardwalk and observation tower. A clean, sandy beach. Usually moderate to heavy surf with occasional strong undertow. Excellent for body surfing or boarding. It also has a large new pavilion.
  • Roger Wheeler State Beach, 100 Sand Hill Cove Road, http://www.riparks.com/rogerwheeler.htm. Locally known as Sand Hill Cove Beach. A popular beach for young children because it is fully-protected by breakwater. No pets allowed. Picnic area, restroom, waterfront, attraction, of interest to children, public beach, alcohol prohibited, no pets, Black Stone Valley and Northern Rhode Island, playground, saltwater swimming.
  • Salty Brine State Beach, 254 Great Island Road, http://www.riparks.com/saltybrine.htm. Features a sandy, clean, pretty beach. Has gentle surf with breakwater shelter. No undertow, gradual drop, near fishing port. Great for kids. Restrooms are available.

  • Narragansett Bikes Inc., 1153 Boston Neck Road,+1 401-782-4444.This store has been in business for years with its friendly and dedicated employees. If your looking for an afternoon for a nice bike ride, Narragansett Bikes has it all, rentals and equipment available.
  • Narragansett Pier Dive Shop, 145 Boon Street, +1 401-783-2225. Wide variety of diving equipment and essentials. You can rent scuba gear, kayaks, and even bikes.
  • Narrow River Kayaks, 95 Middle bridge Road, +1 789-0334. Has all the necessaties to enjoy a day of kayaking or canoeing down the Narrow River. Offers tours, lessons, and rentals.
  • Warm Winds Ltd., 26 Kingstown Road, +1 789-9040. Experience one of the largest surf shops in the Northeast. Sells surf accessories, clothing, sandals, and every type of board you can think of. Including surf, skate, body, skim, snow, and wake boards!

  • Fisherman's Memorial State Park, 1011 Point Judith Road (Rt 108). Horseshoe pits, tennis courts, basketball courts and other recreational opportunities are available at Fishermen's Memorial State Park. It offers a "seaside village" environment, as well as a campground and other facilities.
  • Narragansett Skate Park, 170 Clark Road,+1 401-782-0658. Probably one of the best free parks in Rhode Island. If you are always looking to learn new tricks on your skateboard this is the park to go to. The park has lots of good ramps and a pretty good set up. 5 foot mini ramp, 2 bank ramps, two hips, 2 ledges, 2 table tops one with rail on it. flat to down rail, spine and high and low box on the ground. Horrible when wet and hot.
  • Side Pocket Billiards, Mariner Square, 140 Pt. Judith Road. Looking to play some play some pool, this is the place to come.
  • The Blessing of the Fleet, Every summer in Narragansett there is a 10-mile road race all around Narragansett. There are activities and tons of local vendors at the finish line. The festivities are located on the green right next to The Towers.
  • Southland Riverboat, State Pier #3, Port of Galilee, +1 401-783-2954 http://www.southlandcruises.com/mainpage.htm The Southland Riverboat gives ferry tours all around the coast of Narragansett featuring the Point Judith Lighthouse, the Harbor of Refuge, South County beaches, the Galilee fishing fleet, Snug Harbor, and the eleven islands of Point Judith Pond.
  • Narragansett Ocean Club Roller Skating Rink, 360 S Pier Rd, +1 401-783-1711, This is the only Roller Rink in Narragansett. There is a very large wooden rink, D.J. and refreshments/snack bar.
  • The Towers Dancing, 35 Ocean Road, +1 401-782-2597, All summer long there are dances and dance classes held right in the Towers.

The Victorian Lady, +1 789-0222, http://www.victorianladyri.com. Appeals to those looking for both antique and more feminine items. They sell delicate lace items as well as other merchandise such as stuffed animals, frames, candles, and butterfly houses.

My Little Town Collectables,+1 783-9303. Creates porcelain lighted, hand painted replicas of famous New England buildings. Various light houses as well as the famous Narragansett Coast Guard house can be found here.

Gansett Juice, 74 Narragansett Road, +1 789-7890, http://www.gansettjuice.com. Sells surfboards, skateboards, apparel, wet suits, and many other items for your surfing needs. Provide visitors with rentals and surfing lessons.

  • Aunt Carrie’s Seafood Restaurant, 1240 Ocean Rd., +1 401-783-7930. http://www.auntcarrieri.com One of the oldest seafood restaurants in Narragansett. They are very well known for their clam cakes and chowder. They offer three different types of chowder, all made fresh. Aunt Carrie’s is very affordable and provides a great atmosphere.Entrees-$10.95-$24.95


  • Champlins Seafood, Great Island Rd., Galilee +1 401-783-3152. 11AM-8PM. Known for their great lobster and clambake. They offer fresh seafood all year round. Their winter hours, however, are limited, closing as early as 4PM. This is an extremely popular choice when it comes to seafood.


  • George's of Galilee, 250 Sand Hill Cove Rd.,+1 401-783-2306. http://www.georgesofgalilee.com. “Award Winning Seafood Since 1948!” A family seafood restaurant that doubles as a bar at night located right on the beach. Sit upstairs, downstairs, or outside to enjoy the ocean views. Entrees-$10-$20.
  • The Wheel House Tavern, 294 Great Island Road. http://www.rockingthedock.com The Wheel House Tavern offers live entertainment and great dining. The restaurant is located directly on the waternear the Block Island Ferry, which provides an excellent atmosphere. The menu offers many fresh seafood selections along with a large choice of American dishes. Entrees-$10.95-$24.95


  • Coast Guard House, 40 Ocean Rd. +1 401-783-0700, http://www.coastguardhouse.com. 11AM-11PM A restaurant located on the water that is famous for steaks and seafood. Sit on the upstairs deck to enjoy the sound of the waves hitting the rocks, or dance the night away in the Anchor Lounge, or hang out by the piano bar. Entrees-$14.25-$26.25


  • Charlie O’s Tavern On The Point, 2 Sand Hill Cove Road +1 401-782-2002. Offers a wide variety of choices on the menu, featuring seafood and American styled dishes. Perfect if you want to grab a bite to eat and watch the game or play some pool. Has drink specials daily. Entrees-$10-$20

  • Island Deli, 855 Pt. Judith Rd., +1 401-284-0636. "Fill Y'er Belly" with delicious super sandwiches, soups, fresh salads, premium meats and cheese, and breakfast sandwiches. Perfect if you are looking to pack a lunch and have a picnic on the beach!


  • New Dragon, 80 Pt. Judith Rd.,+1 401-783-1110. Casual dining, serves great Chinese dishes.
  • Crazy Burger, 144 Boone St,+1 401-783-1810. http://www.crazyburger.com Cafe and juice bar. Breakfast is served until 4pm.   • Twin Willows, 865 Boston Neck Road, +1 401-789-8153.This sports bar is perfect for the family to enjoy.
  • Simon's, 2 Sand Hill Cove Road. Located above Charlie O's, new bar featuring speciality martinis. Simon's is a relaxed atmosphere where you can play darts or shuffle board, or comfortably sit around on couches while drinking and talking to friends.

Narragansett is located not far from the University of Rhode Island where college students live during the school year. These students rent out houses usually for a nine month period. When summer approaches all these houses are available and look for people who need a place to stay to enjoy all of what Narragansett has to offer. Staying for a weekend, a week, a month, or even the whole summer, getting a cottage rental is well worth it!
