Hualien County was one of the last places to be settled by the Han Chinese.

Go to the TaiPei Train Station (Not the MRT). Take the Zhi Chiang Train to Hualien. Schedule -> http://163.29.3.96/twrail_en/index.aspx Takes around 3hrs to reach Hualien from Taipei.

The Bus system is pretty rudimentary and it is hard to find the correct time for the departure of the bus. So avoid taking busses whenever possible.

The East-West Cross-island Highway runs through this county. It passes through Taroko Gorge, then the small canyon town of Tienhsiang, then climbing up to Tayuling, at 2565 meters the highest point on the highway.
