Hagerstown

Hagerstown is a charming city on the edge of the Appalachian Mountains along the Potomac River in Maryland, USA. It is the county seat of and the largest city in Washington County. The city is perhaps best known for its outstanding outlet mall, which offers a huge variety of clothing. It is named after Jonathan Hager, a German settler who founded the town. The city has a population of around 40,000 (metropolitan area: 260,000) and is growing very rapidly. Hagerstown is one of the fastest growing cities in Maryland.

Hagerstown is the largest city in Western Maryland and is only an hour's drive from:

  • Washington, DC.
  • Baltimore, Maryland.
  • Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
  • You could also fly in via Hagerstown Regional Airport, located 8 miles outside of the city. Commercial service has ceased as of October 2007, so bring your own plane

  • Renting cars or driving to Hagerstown is advised because only the downtown area is walkable. Walking downtown, however, is great and charming.
  • For a taxi you could call Miller Cabs, You cannot hail a cab on the street.
  • You could use a County Commuter bus. These buses are effective and go to all points in the city.

  • The city is a haven for mountain bikers, fishermen, canoeists and hunters.
  • It is a focal point for outdoor recreation in the area. The Appalachian Trail and the C&O Canal Towpath are close by.

  • The Prime Outlets at Hagerstown The Prime Outlets are a large outdoor mall. There are over 100 stores.
  • Valley Mall The Valley Mall is one of two indoor malls in the Hagerstown Metropolitan area (the other is the Martinsburg Mall). There is over 1,000,000 Square feet of retail space. The anchors are Macy's, The Bon-Ton, JC Penny, Sears, and Regal Cinemas 16.

  • Plaza Hotel, 1718 Underpass Way, Halfway Blvd, Tel: 800 732-0906, [1]. Dining at the Plaza Hotel will be a memorable experience. Attached to the Plaza Hotel, the Fireside Restaurant offers a full menu of steaks, seafood, and other American specialties in an upscale surrounding.
  • The Airport Inn, Located next to the Hagerstown Airport, good atomosphere, and fine dining.
  • The Grille at Park Circle, Located on Park Circle in Downtown. The Grille has good food and was rated one of the best restaurants in Hagerstown.
  • There is fast food and many other choices around the city.

  • The Dagmar, Located on Summit Avenue in Downtown. One of Hagerstown's Historical Landmarks, This ten story hotel has a lot of history and used to be the tallest building in Hagerstown until the Potomac Towers Apartments (16 stories) were built.

  • You could drive from Hagerstown to Antietam Battlefield or the C&O Canal. If you want some scenery you could cross the Potomac River into West Virginia or around other small towns like Boonsboro or Smithsburg.
