Gulgong

Gulgong [1] is a township in the Central West region of the Australian state of New South Wales. Together with its neighbour Mudgee, Gulgong offers a fantastic historical heritage and a host of great small wineries.

A former gold-mining town, Gulgong was the birthplace of one of Australia's great 19th century poets, Henry Lawson.

  • Gulgong Visitors' Centre, 109 Herbert St, open weekdays 8am-4.30pm, Sa 9am-3pm, Su 9.30am-2pm, tel 02 6374 1202. Pamphlets can be obtained here outlining The Gulgong Town Trail which takes in the town's heritage sites.
  • Gulgong Pioneers' Museum, 73 Herbert Street
  • Henry Lawson Centre, 147 Mayne St (the old 1920s Salvation Army Hall), open daily 10am-12pm, extended to 3pm Saturdays, school and public holidays, tel 02 6374 2049 - the largest collection of memorabilia (paintings, prints, cuttings, photographs, books) outside of the Mitchell Library in Sydney relating to Henry Lawson, one of Australia's best-known poets and short-story writers
