Default What Should I Expect On My Trip To NYC?

I'm from a small town in the Midwest.
I've traveled, been to Chicago, Atlanta and other major cities like those.
But from what I understand, NYC is a whole different culture.
I'm actually a little intimidated.
What's the etiquette on cabs and tipping.
Where should I go and where should I avoid.
Am I in risk of harm in certain areas at night.
I'd like to see Times Square at night.
Any advice is appreciated.

hmmm no
if anything NEW YORK is one of the safest cities in the country if not the world. Trust me, you are alot more in danger in Atlanta and Chicago than you could ever be in NYC.

ohhh goosh PLEEEEEASE, if you hair really looks like you avator in real life.... DON"T come to NYC with it stuck up in ponytails... especially if you are from the midwest

ahahahaha

Any decent travel guide will give you the basic info. You should read through it before you leave so you have an idea of the neighborhoods and streets. Unless, you have a lot of money to spare, i'd limit my cab usage. Tipping is 15-20% Stick to walking and the subways. The subway can get you just about anywhere you'd want to go. If panhandlers talk to you on the street just say "not today" Subway is safe even at night. If you are alone on the subway late at night, look for the car closest to the conductor.

Things do move a lot faster. If you're in line at a cafe or whatever, decide on what you want by the time it's your turn. Keep your reactions to yourself. You'll see a wide range of things you may have never seen before. Just get out of the way, if you're lost or confused on the subway or walking down the street. Go inside a store and regroup. Keep your wallet in your front pocket if you're a guy or in your purse zipped up and in front of you.

Really, you have nothing to worry about. I'd say NYC is safer than most cities especially since there' a lot of people around. You're guidebook should tell you what places to avoid at night.

I grew up in probably a SMALLER town than you did in the west and now live in the midwest - but I've also lived in Queens and worked in Manhattan. Don't be intimidated by NYC it is absolutely the BEST and you'll love it!

First, just tell the cab where you're going. From the airport you can expect to pay $40 + into the City; I'd tip at least $5. If they're super nice and help you with your luggage and stuff give them more. If you take short cab rides around the city (which you really don't need to; the subway and walking are great ways to get around) then you can tip a few bucks here and there.

Go where you want to - NYC never sleeps and Times Square is probably one of the safest places to be late at night; tons of people are out and about and it's all lit up just like daytime.

I recommend going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the MoMA (but I like art, maybe you don't)... and Central Park, any museums you like, the statue of liberty (take a staten island ferry for free to see the statue) and ground zero... south street seaport, columbus circle, etc etc etc

Don't go INSIDE central park or Washington Square park in the Village after dark. Walking around central park is cool, though.

I'd avoid the outer burroughs late at night by yourself.

Hope this helps! Bring good walking shoes; your feet are going to hurt. :-)

I went to New York this summer. I was expecting it to be "the best city in the world", but it was kind of dirty and people smoked everywhere. It was still fun though, and very interesting.

The cab drivers I had were difficult to understand and they were crazy drivers.

Go see Statue of Liberty, Central Park, Times Sqaure, Empire State Building, and the NBC Studio Tour. If you like candy go to Dylan's Candy Bar.

OK Ziggy, NYC is very safe if you are smart. Always be polite and courteous. That will get you very far. Avoid going to places where you know tthere is going to be dangerous activity, like inder the docks and underground sex clubs. Other than that have a great time in my home, NYC.

well in my opinion you should take the subway instead of a cab. it's a whole lot cheaper.
ok well avoid ghettos altogether.
don't take the subway after midnight especially if you are going to/through harlem or something. if you have to though, go in the car with the most people, even if it's only like 4 or 5 people. omg times square is soo pretty at night! it's all lit up and pretty.
if you ever get lost, ask a cop or a local. there very friendly.
don't jay walk. there is a good chance you'll be under a car if you do that. good luck, have fun, and stay safe!
