I'm planning to take a very brief (3-4 days) vacation in late February/early March to celebrate finishing law school. I want to go somewhere in the Caribbean or to Mexico but I've never been so I have no clue.
Some background - I'm single, in my 20's & will be going with a friend, flying from Minnesota. I'd like to go somewhere that is as non-touristy as possible, preferably where we can see archaeological sites & go to museums as well as the usual beach/pool/drinking stuff! Thanks in advance for your opinion! |

I liked Puerto Vallarta...but then, my tastes are a bit different from many...I stayed in a little, almost run-down hotel in the older part of the city, far from the big box places that have every luxury known to man, and charge you for it, even if you canīt use it. Little and intimate, and on the edge of TOWN. barely in the tourist district.
Can't stand being too cramped in...can't stand places that are totally generic. But, still, walk to the main touristy areas, yeah, pool, AND beach, and drinks served at all. Oh...Archeological sites aren't very near there. But P.V. has the most incredible cathedral! |

I've spent time in the Bahamas, Mexico, St. Martin, and south Florida. I thought St. Martin was great, but that was after I got married. If you're single looking to meet people, you'll probably have a better time in Mexico. There's an island just off the coast of Cancun called Isla Mujeres (the island of women), and it's a really fun, quaint place.
It has a little bit of touristy stuff, but nothing at all like Cancun. There are some places on the island that have ruins to visit, but I don't recall if they had any museums. It's a fairly small island (3-4 miles across I think), so you can hit all of the hotspots in that amount of time. You'll have to fly into Cancun, then taxi to Puerto Juarez, and catch a ferry to the island. Definitely worth it, and the prices are extremely reasonable there, too. |

Mexico seems like the best place for u. The archaeological sites there are amazing, and u will not run out on beaches and bars either...
If it's untouristy you want, try for example going to Oaxaca or Chiapas, and then on to the Yucatan Peninsula. Anyway, Mexico is a huge country with many types of places to go. You can browse the various travel destinations in Mexico for example in happytellus .com /mexico They should have a nice selection of places for you to choose from. Buen viaje! |
