Travel Expert Peter Greenberg

A self-described "travel detective," Peter says air travel to and from major airports can be hectic, sometimes even chaotic. He says that between unrealistic and unregulated over-scheduling by airlines, expanded service to Europe and weather conditions, you can expect delays and cancellations to get even worse. Peter shares some tips that he says can save you from stressing out while traveling:

• Avoid major hub airports.
• Fly before 8:00 a.m. or after 10:00 p.m.
• If your plane is delayed for any reason, other than weather, invoke Rule 240. "It is the one rule airlines never want you to know about," he says. "If you invoke Rule 240, that means the airline has to take the ticket and endorse it over to the next available flight." The next available flight can be on any major airline, Peter says. Almost all of the big domestic airlines participate in Rule 240, he says.
• When you are experiencing delays or cancellations, Peter says that you should keep a written record of every person you speak with. He says that having records to refer to will help you get a refund or a voucher for your trouble.

I love Rule 240! I travel a lot to Finland and I usually experience delays. I will definitely try this out!

One of the way to save on transport cost is to fly open-jaw, that is the industry jargon from flying from point At B and then from point C to A. You would have to find your way from point B to C yourself. But you save on not going back from C to B to catch the return flight.

What happen if I can not find a flight from B to C? I probably have to fly with my jaw open.

Usually the distance between B and C are not too far apart to make surface transport such as trains possible. No point flying from B to C.
