The Mercer Williams House has recently opened it's doors to public touring. The house was originally built by an ancestor of songwriter and Savannah native Johnny Mercer.
The Mercer House was made famous in the book and movie, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". The 1997 film, directed by Clint Eastwood, featured Kevin Spacey as Jim Williams and Jude Law as Danny Hansford. He was called Billy Carl Hanson in the movie, so as not to offend members of the Hansford family. The Lady Chablis appeared as herself. The reporter role, played by John Cusack, was based upon Berendt.
Before their recent opening to visitors, the only glimpses of this famous house were seen in the movie. Otherwise, the current residents of this privately owned home like to keep things private.
Admission for adults is $12.50, students/children under 12 = $8.00, and includes a tour. It's located at 429 Bull Street, in Savannah, Geogia. Phone # 912-236-6352
